More about Francis...
| Location: | US-Sunnyvale, CA |
| Title: | Sr. Reliability Engineer |
| School | Georgia Institute of Technology |
| Degree: | MS/MA |
| Major: | Mechanical Engineering | | What is the most challenging part of your job here at Spansion? | Often, language and culture barriers present great gaps between not only our customers and ourselves, but also internally. It has been challenging to understand these differences, but is ultimately rewarded with a sense of community and respect throughout the company. Even a few words of broken Japanese or Korean can serve to share the smile, decreasing the virtual and physical gap between the employees of Spansion around the world. | | Describe an interesting project you are working on (or have worked on) at Spansion. | As a mechanical engineer, it's always interesting to be involved with new packaging technologies. One particularly interesting project was the replacement of silicon spacers used in our multi-chip packaging products with a special film which rested on top of the wires and eliminated the need for the extra material and processing steps of the silicon spacers. | | How does it feel to do your job? | In one word: rewarding. Projects that are intellectually stimulating, colleagues that are friendly and pleasant to deal with, and an overall atmosphere and code of conduct that breeds respect all combine to make work a fulfilling experience. | | Tell us about the team you work with and what you enjoy most about working with them. | As a Quality and Reliability engineer, I work with many groups, such as Final Manufacturing Operations, Product Engineering, Marketing, Sales, and Field Quality. Like myself, they are all committed to customer satisfaction and quality, which means that you're all in the same boat paddling in the same direction. That makes it a great deal easier to get where you're going! | | What makes you go to work each day? | Several things: the knowledge that I'm appreciated, that I serve a vital function to the company, the fact that the work is interesting and that it's a pleasant place to do business all sum up to a positive overall experience. | | What is your 'Claim to Fame'? | My (current) claim to fame is my research on the construction and the reconstruction of historical high heels, specifically zoccoli and chopines of 16th century Italy and Spain (where they were most prominent). I based on the research of other prominent scholars such as June Swann, Ruth Mathilda Anderson, Bruna Niccoli and Janet Arnold, and I've also visited several museums and examined extant pieces up close. My research as well as historical reproductions can be found at http://aands.org/raisedheels/. | | What was your first job? | My first job was vacuuming the floors at my father's business in Manhattan; I was about 10 years old. I moved on to operating, assembling, and repairing the computerized engraving systems and vinyl letter cutting systems that he marketed and sold. |
